A Case Study by Chris Breece

Recently I had the opportunity to provide some consultation and person-centered planning services to a local agency. The original call that I received from them was a request to provide some consultation and a plan to support one of their clients with some behavioral issues. When addressing behavioral issues, before any plan is ever written, I go through a process called a Functional Assessment to try to come up with an idea for why the person may be acting the way they are.

This is typically an involved interview process, but for this initial phone conversation, my goal was to find out a little about what they were experiencing behaviorally and what was happening in the individual's life. The contact person described the behavior of concern, but there was not a lot of information because of how private and self-isolating the person was.

Part of our process with Positive Behavior Support, is to help identify and teach a behavior that can replace the existing behavior of concern. While continually isolating one's self is certainly a concerning behavior, it's the type of behavior that is reliant on the person having some reason to not be isolated, which speaks to their own wants, needs, and desires.

Given that those working with the individual did not have a clear vision of what she wanted for her life, my recommendation was to take a step even further back from doing a Functional Assessment and instead focus on Person-Centered Planning. Person-Centered Planning is a process where the person has the opportunity to explore some of their hopes and aspirations as well to identify the resources and structure needed to make those take shape.

We take that little extra time
to dig deeper and stay curious.

Initially, the individual was not pleased about some outside person (myself) being there to "tell her what to do", but once the planning process started and she had the opportunity to unconditionally express herself, dream after dream and goal after goal came forth. The excitement level in the room grew exponentially over the next several hours as the individual started to shape and plan her own life. While there will likely need to be continued follow-up for this individual, something happened that day that surpassed the contact person's expectations and for the first time: they saw the focus individual "come alive".

While behavioral planning is very important for many people, it is not always the correct tool for the job. Had we gone ahead with the original proposal, the outcome would have been less productive. I may have been able to identify a potential cause for the individual's behavior and even to have generated a plan as per the client's request. However the result may have likely been viewed by the individual as just some guy putting something in place to "tell them what to do" and ultimately have been a short-term fix to a long-term problem.

Our goal is to be of benefit to our clients and to add value to others. That's why it's so important that we take that little extra time to dig deeper and stay curious, so that we can tailor our services to meet needs of our clients.

How To Get Started

Consultation is all about meeting your needs. As such, our first question will be, "What do you need?" The type of information you will need to provide may include the following:

You don't need to know all of these right away when you contact us. We can work through this with you, which is part of the free assessment process.

The first step, though, is to contact us so we can get started with the free assessment service!
